Chadar Trek: A Journey on Frozen River


Chadar Trek is one of the most adventurous and challenging treks in the world. It is a winter trek, which takes place in the Zanskar region of Ladakh, India. The word "Chadar" means a blanket, and the trek is named so because it involves walking on the frozen Zanskar River, which looks like a white blanket of snow.


The trek begins from the village of Chilling and continues for approximately 65 kilometers, ending at the village of Nerak. The trek offers mesmerizing views of the mighty Himalayas and the frozen Zanskar River. It is a test of one's physical and mental strength as the temperature drops to as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius.

The trek starts from Leh, the capital city of Ladakh. The closest airport to Leh is Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, which is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar. From the airport, you can hire a taxi or take a shared cab to reach Leh. The trek starts from Chilling, which is around 65 kilometers from Leh.


Stays:

During the trek, you will be staying in camps set up on the banks of the frozen river. The camps are equipped with basic facilities like sleeping bags, blankets, and food. The temperature inside the camps can drop to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius, so it is advisable to carry warm clothes and sleeping bags.


The trek takes around 7 to 8 days to complete, and it is important to be physically fit to undertake this trek. It is recommended to start preparing for the trek at least 2 months in advance by doing regular exercises and building stamina.


The best time to do the Chadar Trek is from January to February when the river is completely frozen. However, the trek is subject to weather conditions, and it is advisable to check the weather forecast before embarking on the trek.
